Stephens drives in three as baseball wins home opener

Sophomore Austyn Stephens was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI in the win.

ALBION – That home win feeling.

In their 2023 home opener, the Albion College baseball team received a quality start from Scotty Clippert en route to a 4-1 victory over Defiance College. Clippert (1-0) threw six innings, allowing no earned runs and walking only one.

Freshman Daniel Bruzdewicz was strong in relief, tossing three scoreless innings. Bruzdewicz struck out a pair while walking none.

Three of Albion's four runs came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Matt McGann led off the frame with a single up the middle and freshman Evan Schuster followed with a base hit to left. Junior Braeden Emery recorded the third straight Albion hit, lining a hustle double to right center field to drive in McGann.

One batter later, Austyn Stephens roped a ball to left, bringing in both Schuster and Emery for a 3-0 Albion lead. Stephens was one of two players in the lineup to record a multi-hit game.

Defiance's lone run came in the top of the fifth – an unearned run off Clippert.

In the fifth, the Britons loaded the bases, but could only cash in on one run. McGann and Emery drew walks while Schuster was hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded, Stephens grounded the ball to shortstop. With no play, McGann came across to score on the infield single, giving Albion a three run lead again.

Bruzdewicz would be terrific in relief to keep the Yellow Jackets off the board for the remainder of the contest. Defiance had runners on second and third in the eighth, but the freshman got out of the jam with a called third strike.

Sophomore shortstop Ryker Mazey was 2 for 4 in the game. He along with Stephens and Patrick Merolla all swiped bases in the win.

Albion will head back to Ohio for a three game set with Wittenberg. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
