Gurzell, Malcom win twice as MTEN drops nailbiter

ALBION – An incredible fight fell just short for the Albion College men's tennis team, dropping their MIAA opener to Trine University, 5-4. Drake Malcolm was part of two incredible wins, both coming in breakers.

Malcolm and fellow captain Brett Gurzell pulled off an incredible comeback victory at first doubles, winning 8-7 (7-5). At third doubles, the Doyles continued to shine, winning their match and holding off a comeback, 8-5.

Gurzell went on to grind out a tough win at first singles. The senior won his first set in comeback fashion, 7-5, and then went on to take the match with a 6-3 margin in the second.

Malcolm also came back – this one from a first set loss – to pick up a win at third singles. Malcolm dropped the opener 7-6(3) before rallying for wins of 7-5 and 6-0.

Albion will host Olivet College on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. match.
