Pitchers shut down Berg, baseball earns big win

Brayden Raether and Daniel Bruzdewicz combined for a scoreless afternoon.

ALBION – Six remarkable innings from Daniel Bruzdewicz combined with a three RBI day from Austyn Stephens were keys to the Albion College baseball team's 7-0 victory over Heidelberg University. The Student Princes came in swinging a hot bat, and the arms of Bruzdewicz and Brayden Raether shut them down.

Raether started the game, going three solid innings. Bruzdewicz, a freshman, came on in relief, tossing six innings – each better than the next. The Albion pitching staff did not allow a walk or a HBP, as Bruzdewicz picked up his first collegiate win.

The middle of the lineup did a majority of the damage for the Britons, as the 2-5 hitters combined to go 7 for 12 and drove in five runs.

Albion's first run came in the bottom of the second. Freshman Evan Schuster worked a one-out walk and stole second. Two batters later, Carson Dunn roped a stand up double to right center, plating Schuster for the early lead.

In the third, the Brits struck for three. Mark Lauro and Matt McGann hit back to back singles. With one away, Braeden Emery smoked a ball to the warning track for a triple, driving in both runners. Stephens then singled up the middle for a 4-0 Briton lead. Albion tacked on a run in the fifth on an unusual fielder's choice, giving the Brits a 5-0 advantage.

The hosts broke the game open in the seventh. McGann led off the frame with a single and Emery smacked his second extra base hit of the day. Stephens brought in McGann with a sac fly to center. After a Student Prince error, the Brits led 7-0.

Raether and Bruzdewicz did a tremendous job at shutting down the OAC Hitter of the Week – Adam McVicker. The Heidelberg clean up hitter was 0 for 4 on the afternoon.

Albion commences MIAA action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Kalamazoo. Game times are scheduled for 1 and 4 p.m.
