Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball shuts out Trine twice on Thursday

ANGOLA, Ind. – A pair of much-needed shutouts and dominant pitching performances lifted the Albion College baseball team to a sweep over Trine University on Thursday. Three pitchers combined for 16 scoreless innings, striking out 12 in the process.

GAME ONE: Albion 2 Trine 0

In a seven inning affair, freshman Cole Giesige continued to impress. In a matchup that featured ace versus ace, it was Giesige that came away with seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits and fanning six.

Albion got just four hits in the game, but plated both runs in the fourth inning – proving to be plenty behind Giesige and a solid defense. Matt McGann worked a one out walk and moved to third off a single from Mark Lauro

With runners at the corners, sophomore Ryker Mazey slapped a ball off the end of the bat, landing in centerfield and driving in McGann. On the next batter, Mazey stole second and the Trine catcher's throw went into center, allowing Lauro to cross for the second Briton run.

With 69 strikeouts, Giesige sits second in the MIAA.

GAME TWO: Albion 10 Trine 0

Aided by a 5-run fourth and eight scoreless innings by Brayden Raether, Albion was able to complete the sweep and guarantee a winning series. Carson Dunn led off the game with a double to right center and was driven in by Lauro two hitters later. Mazey later grounded into a fielder's choice in the third, giving Albion a 2-0 advantage.

Albion broke the game open in the fourth, as Braeden Emery – who was hitting the ball on the screws all day – singled to lead off the frame. After a Trine error and a walk to Evan Schuster, Patrick Merolla hit a bloop single to center, driving in two Britons.

With the bases loaded and two away, Mazey brought in two more Albion runners with a line drive to left field. After four, the Brits led 7-0. Another fielder's choice off the bat of Mazey gave the visitors an 8-0 lead in the eighth.

Albion's final runs came in the top of the ninth. Emery smacked a one out double and came around to score on Tyler Rosa's first collegiate hit and RBI. The freshman later scored on a wild pitch.

Raether tossed eight strong innings, scattering eight hits and striking out four. The sophomore was also helped by a great defense, who committed zero errors in the contest. Luke Robertson pitched the ninth, striking out two in the inning.
