Volleyball battles to opening day sweep

After dominating their first match, the Albion College volleyball team rallied to win in five to win both games on opening day. The Britons made quick work of SUNY-Brockport, sweeping the Golden Eagles before knocking off Mount Union in the final game.

GAME ONE: Albion 3 SUNY-Brockport 0

After a tight 28-26 win in the first set, the Britons got out any day one jitters by taking the next two sets, 25-15 and 25-18. Albion was aided by a poor attack night by Brockport, as the Golden Eagles swung at a .070 clip.

Olivia Alexander led the offense with 16 kills. Freshman right side Carly Frank made an immediate impact, adding eight kills for the Brits. Fellow freshman Paige Williamson showed no signs of nerves in the libero spot, tallying 18 digs in the win.

Mariah Brenz dished out 30 assists, as Courtney Companion totaled 16 digs.

GAME TWO: Albion 3 Mount Union 2

A monster game from Alexander helped Albion in game two, as the senior had 19 kills and 18 digs. Kaylynne Nicholson, the second outside for the Britons, contributed 13 kills for Albion in the victory. Frank finished with nine on the right side to lead Albion's offense.

In addition to Alexander's 18 digs, Williamson had another 18 dig performance, as Jenna Schienke finished with 17 digs. Brenz dished out 45 assists while picking up 12 digs, as Companion added 10 digs in the win. Going along with her double-double, Brenz had seven kills in the match.

Albion got production from its middles Ja'Nyece Larry and Reese Williams, as each recorded three solo blocks and a trio of assisted blocks.

Tomorrow, the Britons wrap up the Mount Union Invitational with games at noon and 4 p.m. Albion will play Buffalo State before finishing the weekend with a match against John Carroll.
