Brits bounce back with sweep of Berg

Olivia Alexander's 16 kills paced the Albion offense

ALBION – Coming off a disappointing weekend, the Albion College volleyball team answered with a 3-0 sweep over Heidelberg University. The Brits faced set point in the opener, scoring six straight points to lock down momentum on their side for the match.

Reigning MIAA Athlete of the Week Olivia Alexander recorded yet another double-double, leading the team with 16 kills and adding 10 digs. Carly Frank continued her solid freshman season by adding eight kills for the Brits.

Heidelberg held a 24-20 lead in the first set before the hosts claimed a 26-24 victory. A kill from Alexander gave the ball back to the Brits, and two points later Mariah Brenz served her first of two aces in the rally. Her second, fittingly enough, came at set point to push Albion ahead in the match.

Albion utilized a 5-0 run to distance themselves from the Berg, 15-9 in the second. Despite the big lead, a scrappy Student Price squad rolled to tie the match at 19 all. From there, the story was all Albion, seeing the hosts win the middle set by a 25-19 margin. In that stretch, Brenz registered a pair of blocks – one solo and one assisted – before Jenna Schienke's back row kill gave the Brits the win.

The teams continuously traded points back and forth throughout the third set until the very end. Albion, poised to complete the sweep, got a kill from Frank to put them one point away from victory. On the next rally. Kaylynne Nicholson and Ja'Nyece Larry blocked the Berg attack to send the Brits home with a win.

The block was one of Larry's four on the night. She along with Brenz led the team in blocking.

Courtney Companion was rock solid in the back row, totaling an Albion-high 18 digs. Brenz (13) and Paige Williamson (12) were the other Britons to finish with double-digit digs.

Albion had seven aces compared to Heidelberg's two. Albion improves to 8-4.

The Britons will play three games this weekend at the Calvin Invitational to tune up before conference play starts next Tuesday. Albion will play North Park at 5 p.m. Friday, followed by two matches on Saturday.
