Kresge Krazies back VB in sweep of Earlham

Mariah Brenz reached the 2,000 career assist plateau in the win.

ALBION – The Kresge Krazies are back.

In its home opener, the Albion College volleyball team dazzled in front of a packed house, sweeping Earlham College in straight sets. The Britons – who are still receiving votes in the latest AVCA Top 25 Poll – were dynamic on the block, giving an enormous crowd much to cheer about.

Senior Mariah Brenz recorded her 2,000th career assist in the first set. On a feed to freshman  Reese Williams, Brenz reached the milestone as part of her 24 assist night.

Knotted at 18 late in set one, the hosts rattled off seven straight points with Courtney Companion back to serve, lifting them to a 25-18 victory. The Quakers committed five attack errors in the run, as Companion added an ace.

Similar to the opening set, Albion and Earlham battled throughout the middle set. Holding a one point lead, kills from Brenz and Jenna Schienke coupled with an attack error saw the Britons leading 21-17. Despite trading points down the stretch, Olivia Alexander vaulted Albion to a 25-21 win, ending the set on a kill. Alexander led the Albion attack with nine kills on the night.

Brenz was a force from the service line in the final set, as Albion utilized a 9-0 run to build a 13-3 advantage. During the run, the senior fired off three aces to put the Britons in prime position to claim their fifth straight victory.

Alexander aided her stat line with five assists blocks and one solo block. Ja'Nyece Larry and Carly Frank each tacked on six kills in the win. Freshman libero Paige Williamson paced the defense with nine digs.

Albion improves to 5-0 on the year as Earlham slips to 3-2.

The test continues to get tougher this weekend when Albion heads to the MIAA-NCAC Crossover, hosted by Wittenberg University. On Friday, the Brits will face off against Ohio Wesleyan at 5 p.m.
