Williamson leads defense in tight loss

Freshman libero Paige Williamson finished the night with 24 digs.

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Thiiiis close. 

After rallying to force a fifth set, the Albion College volleyball team dropped a tight 3-2 decision to Ohio Wesleyan University. The loss hands the Britons their first of the season, moving to 3-1. 

Kaylynne Nicholson and Paige Williamson recorded career-highs in digs. Williamson led the team with 24, while Nicholson tallied 17. Jenna Schienke had a season-best 18.

On the attack, the Albion offense was paced by Olivia Alexander, finishing with 18 kills. Freshman Carly Frank added 14,

Mariah Brenz led the team with 42 assists. Junior middle Ja'Nyece Larry finished the night with five blocks.

The story was all OWU in the first set, as the Battling Bishops attacked at a stout .312 mark. Albion struggled on offense, swinging at just a .121 margin. Ohio Wesleyan built a big lead early and would hold the Brits at bay to take the opener, 25-16. 

Despite a tight knit second set and Albion holding the lead at times, the Battling Bishops came away with a 27-25 victory. 

Late in the third set, Larry and Brenz were tremendous at the net, recording two blocks in a row to shift the momentum to the Britons. Alexander slammed a kill home to keep the Brits alive and send the teams to a fourth set following a 25-21 victory.

Albion rallied in the fourth to force a winner take all fifth set. 

Ohio Wesleyan erupted to an early lead in the final set, making the margin just too big for the Britons to overcome. 

Albion concludes the weekend tomorrow with games against Denison and No. 21 Wittenberg. Matches are set for 12:30 and 3 p.m.
