Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's hoops earns gritty win over Olivet

ALBION – With 28 seconds on the clock, Jaylen Flaniken lobbed a beautiful pass to AJ Barden, who sank the go-ahead layup in the Albion College men's basketball team's 65-64 win over The University of Olivet. The Britons erased double-digit deficits and overcame a chippy contest to earn their first conference victory of the season.

Flaniken had one of his best games in an Albion uniform, scoring 11 points and grabbing a career-best 13 boards. Barden also recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, as Kam Mayes finished with 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds while adding four dimes.

In the first half, the story was all Olivet as things looked bleak for the Britons. The Comets extended their lead to as large as 13 points before Albion slowly started chipping away. Four straight free throws from Deonte Roberts cut the deficit to 36-31 at the half. Roberts was stellar off the bench. The freshman scored eight points, recorded three rebounds, a block and a steal.

Albion flirted with the lead for most of the season half, but the Comets seemed to always have an answer at the other end. With 8:50 on the clock, the Brits finally pulled ahead with a Barden bucket – similar to the go-ahead one late in the contest. Freshmen Roberts and Kurtis Rhodes added baskets to stretch the lead to five – proving to be critical as the Comets continued to answer.

The visitors took a 64-63 advantage with just under two minutes remaining. After the Comets got a stop, the Brits desperately needed one at the other end. With the shot clock dwindling, Olivet was forced to pull up a jumper from the foul line, blocked by Barden before a shot clock violation gave the ball back to Albion. Out of the timeout, the Brits ran a play that lifted them back in front, courtesy of Barden's basket.

Needing one more stop, Flaniken made the Olivet player force up a jumper that rattled out, securing the win.

On Saturday, Albion hosts No. 11 Trine for a 3 p.m. contest.
