Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Stellar defense leads women's hoops to win over RV Trine

ALBION – There simply was no doubt about it.

In control for nearly the entire game, the Albion College women's basketball team defeated RV Trine University, 48-38. Albion held a 10-2 (yes, two) after one period and never looked back, allowing just three ties and two lead changes.

Riley Davis played all 40 minutes for the Britons, scoring a game-high 16 points. The senior added six rebounds and an assist. Lolo Reed was stellar as well, scoring 13 points while bringing down seven boards and dishing out five assists.

Albion received incredible minutes off the bench from Payton Baker and Daniah Beavers. Baker scored seven points and had six rebounds, while Beavers hauled in 11 rebounds. Defensively, the Britons were phenomenal, as no Trine player scored more than seven points.

After a 2-2 score held for a solid time, Baker's three off a feed from Reed gave Albion the lead. The shot sparked a late run by the hosts in the first quarter, as Beavers made a layup and Davis knocked down a triple.

Trine found its groove in the second quarter, knocking down three 3-pointers in the period. Coming off a back and forth battle, Trine trailed Albion 21-20 at the half. There was a slim period where the Thunder flirted with the lead, as the teams traded buckets to open the new half, but a pull-up jumper from Davis secured the Albion lead for good.

Leading 30-28, Emma Cooke sank a pair of free throws and Reed connected with Baker in transition to build the lead to six. Another jumper, this one from Reed, helped the Britons gain a 36-28 advantage. Heading into the fourth, Albion held an eight point lead.

Despite sloppy play in the fourth quarter by both teams, Trine's offense was greatly disrupted by a scrappy Albion squad. Unable to find any sort of rhythm, the Briton lead would hold to knock off the Thunder for the second time in the last three tries.
Albion blocked five shots in the win, with DB Edwards and Beavers each recording one. The other Albion block was a big-time block from 5'1" Ava Guilford early in the contest.

On Wednesday, Albion heads to No. 7 Hope for a 6 p.m. game.
