Volleyball splits, battles in two five-setters

ELMHURST, Ill. – On Saturday, the Albion College volleyball team played a pair of tough five set matches, ending the way with a win. The Britons fell to UW-River Falls before a resounding victory over Wartburg to cap off the day. Albion reverse swept the Knights, highlighted by a 29-27 win in the fourth set. 

Albion battled with a gritty UW-River Falls team in their opening game of the day. The Brits rallied in the fourth set to force a decisive fifth set, ultimately falling 16-14 in the final set. UWRF outscored Albion 6-1 in the final seven points of the match. 

Sophomore libero Paige Williamson was stellar, setting a new career-high with 32 digs.

Albion was led offensively by Carly Frank's 16 kills. Sophomore Margaret Jones tied a career-high with 11 kills, while Payton Rice added 10. Molly Edmunds also had a career day, recording 26 assists and adding 11 digs. Fellow freshmen Joelle Boeskool dished out 15 assists and had 13 digs, while Ava Wilcox had 14 digs. 

In game two, Williamson topped her career performance with 36 digs to lead the way. Frank had a monster performance for Albion, slamming 21 kills from the right side and hitting at a .390 clip. Jones was the only other Briton to finish with double-digit kills, totaling 10. 

Reese Williams added seven kills to go with a .500 hitting percentage. Alexis Ames was solid off the bench, contributing eight kills and seven digs. 

Like Williamson, Edmunds crushed a previous career-best with 29 assists, as Boeskool added 22. The duo combined for 22 digs as well in the win. Jones led all players with five total blocks. 

The VolleyBrits resume MIAA play on Tuesday with a home contest against Alma. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
