Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Stearns tallies nine points, MLAX gets big win

ALBION – They really, really needed this.

In a slump in their final non-conference contest of the season, the Albion College men's lacrosse team defeated Carthage College, 19-12.

It was a career day for sophomore co-captain Cal Stearns, who totaled nine points on the afternoon. Stearns scored five goals and dished out four assists. Both Brendan Mercier and Ethan Rottell finished with five points.

After one period, the hosts held a 5-1 advantage. Stearns netted both goals before a Carthage goal briefly halted the momentum. Team-goal leader Marcus Haynie scored his first of the afternoon before Rottell and Timmy Salinas increased the lead to 5-1 after the first quarter.

Fabrizio Raciti found Rottell in the second quarter to bring the lead to 6-1. Following a Carthage goal, the Britons ended the first half on a 5-0 run. Two goals from Stearns and one from Haynie, Marcier and Vaughn Shewell helped the hosts sustain a 11-2 lead at the break.

In the third, the Firebirds outscored the Britons 7-4 to cut into the lead. Albion's four goals came from Robbie Dameron, Mercier and a pair from Rottell. Heading into the final frame, Albion led 15-9.

The Britons committed just 14 turnovers, compared to 23 by Carthage. Albion was stellar on man-down opportunities, as the Firebirds never could cash in on five EMOs.

Sophomore Logan Bride led Albion, causing five turnovers in the victory.

Jack Erickson turned in a solid performance in goal, making 18 saves in the win.

On Apr. 6, the Britons will host Hope College in the MIAA opener. First face off is scheduled for 12 p.m.
