Emery's big day lifts Brits to series win

OLIVET, Mich. – Slugging 16 runs off 14 hits, the Albion College baseball team won the season series against The University of Olivet with a 16-4 win on Tuesday. Senior Braeden Emery led the offense, going 3 for 5 with 5 RBI and three extra base hits.

The Britons scored five in the top of the first, as Kris Stojanovski drove in the first Briton run. Albion followed with a RBI double off the bat of Emery and a run-scoring single from Ryker Mazey to lift the visitors to a 5-0 advantage.

Evan Schuster started the top of the second by getting hit by a pitch, stole second and moved to third on an error by the Comets. He then scored when Mark Lauro lifted a sac fly to center, inflating the lead to 6-0.

The Comets tacked on two in the second and two in the third to cut the deficit to 6-4. Albion answered by regaining a four run lead, scoring twice in the top of the fifth. Stojanovski worked a leadoff walk and stole second. He scored off Matt McGann's single through the left side. With McGann at second and one out, Emery lace another double down the left field line to drive in McGann.

An error, a RBI single from Lauro and a sac fly from Garrett Draper increased the advantage to 11-4 after the top of the sixth. Schuster recorded a RBI base knock in the seventh before Albion exploded for four more runs in the eighth to put them over the run-rule threshold. The biggest blow came courtesy of an Emery no-doubt home run to left.

Junior Luke Robertston (3-1) earned the win in relief. Robertson threw three scoreless innings for the Brits.

With his fifth home run of the season, Emery is tied for fourth in the league. Stojanovski sits second in steals, while Schuster is tied for fourth in the same category.

All nine starters finished with at least one hit.

On Friday, Albion hosts Hope College for the first game of a three game set. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
