Lauro lifts baseball to win over Hope

ALBION – An electricity in the air, a Drew Renner Instagram takeover and a six run first inning.

Slugging 15 hits, the Albion College baseball team knocked off MIAA-leading Hope College, 13-8 on Friday afternoon. Albion scored six runs in the bottom of the first to chase the Hope starter after 0.2 innings to take the first game of the series.

Fifth year senior Mark Lauro was stellar at the dish, going 4 for 6 with a pair of RBI. Kris Stojanovski was masterful in the cleanup slot, going 3 for 5 with 3 RBI. Also recording three hits was sophomore Evan Schuster

Hope loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the first, but a popout and a 6-4-3 double play ended the threat and gave the Britons momentum heading into the home half of the inning.

Schuster took the first pitch he saw right back up the middle for a leadoff single. Three batters later, a bloop single from Lauro was followed by a line drive off the bat of Stojanovski, driving in Schuster for a 1-0 lead. A walk to Matt McGann loaded the bases before Braeden Emery smacked a single through the left side for a 2-0 lead.

Albion went on to score four runs with two outs, as Ryker Mazey lined a shot off the field umpire, plating Stojanovski. Sophomore DH Logan Farmer laced a single up the middle, bringing in both McGann and Emery for a 5-0 lead. The Brits got their final run when Schuster – back up again – smoked a double to left.

The Britons tacked on three more in the third when Lauro lined a two-run single to right field. Stojanovski followed with another RBI base knock, driving home Carson Dunn for a 9-0 lead.

Hope scratched across three runs throughout the next three frames, but Emery smashed a no-double home run to dead center for a 10-3 advantage. The long ball was Emery's third in as many games. Stojanovski gave the Brits another run in the bottom of the seventh with a double to center.

In the eighth, Garrett Draper worked a leadoff walk and Farmer followed two hitters later with an opposite field single. After an error by the Flying Dutchmen, Dunn lifted a fly ball to left, driving home Draper for a 12-5 lead. Lauro followed with his fourth hit of the afternoon, helping Albion take a 13-5 lead.

Hope hit a three run home run in the top of the ninth. With two away and one runner on, Scotty Clippert came in for the final out. The senior got the Hope batter to strikeout looking, helping the Brits take the first game of the set.

Sophomore Cole Giesige (2-1) threw 5.2 innings, fanning seven in the win. Luke Robertson tossed three innings in relief before Clippert came in for the final batter.

Tomorrow, the Brits head to Hope for the doubleheader of the series. Game times are scheduled for 1 and 4 p.m.
