Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball sweeps Knights, wins Calvin series

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich, – Two home runs from Evan Schuster, six hits from Mark Lauro and elite pitching from Luke Robertson helped the Albion College baseball team sweep Calvin University. Albion defeated the Knights, 8-7 in comeback fashion in game one before an 8-4 win in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: Albion 8 Calvin 7

Erasing an early 6-0 deficit, the Brits used late heroics from Schuster to steal the first game of the day. Albion headed to the sixth inning trailing 7-1 before rallying for a five spot. Kris Stojanovski singled up the middle and Braeden Emery was hit by a pitch. Sophomore Logan Farmer drove in the first run of the inning with a base hit up the middle. He and Emery advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch two batters later to put a pair in scoring position.

Jack Lasceski smacked an opposite field double to the gap in left center, plating Emery and Farmer for a 7-4 deficit. Two walks loaded the bases for Lauro. With two outs, the fifth year senior delivered with a single, driving in Lasceski and Schuster to put the Britons within a run.

Garrett Draper led off the top of the eighth with a hit before Schuster cracked his third home run of the season deep to left, giving Albion the go-ahead run. Robertson entered the bottom of the eighth in a bases loaded jam and got a strikeout to end the threat for the Knights.

With a runner on first and one out, shortstop Ryker Mazey was perfectly played up the middle, snagging a line drive and doubling off the runner at first to end the game and give the visitors the win.

Junior Sean Cooper (2-2) earned the win in relief, tossing 2.2 innings while allowing no runs and just two hits. Robertson worked a four out save to earn his third of the season.

Lauro was 3 for 5 with a pair of RBI. Schuster. Lasceski and Stojanovski all recorded two hits in the win.

GAME TWO: Albion 8 Calvin 4

It took just three batters for Albion to claim the lead in the nightcap. Schuster was plunked to start the game and moved to second on a groundout. Lauro ripped a single down the right field line to drive in Schuster for the first run of the game.

Schuster crushed a two out, two run home run in the second, inflating the lead to 3-0. Mazey, Lauro and Stojanovski all followed with base hits to push the lead to 4-0. Emery then reached on an error, allowing Albion's fifth run to cross for an early 5-0 advantage.

In the third, Draper led off the frame with a walk and advanced on a HBP and a wild pitch. Schuster drove in his third of the game with a sac fly for a 6-0 lead. Albion's seventh run came in the top of the fourth, thanks to an RBI groundout off the bat of Draper. Sam Archambeau drove in the final Briton run of the day.

Robertson escaped another bases loaded jam in the eighth, this time with nobody out. After a strikeout, he was aided by a diving play in right from Stojanovski that led to a double play.

Emery swiped four bases in the nightcap.

Nick Baidoon (1-0) earned the win in relief. Robertson picked up his second save of the day and fourth of the season.

The Britons will play their final series of the 2024 season next week. On Thursday, Albion heads to Adrian for the single game, followed by the twinbill in Albion on Friday.
