Howell lifts MLAX to conference victory

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Backed by 17 saves from freshman Caleb Howell, the Albion College men's lacrosse team knocked off Kalamazoo College, 13-5. In Howell's first collegiate start, he limited the Hornets to just five goals, helping Albion earn its first conference win. 

Six Britons recorded two or more points in the victory. After one quarter, the Brits got goals from three different players to take a 3-0 lead. Cal Stearns, Matt Montgomery and Brock Yabs all scored in the period. 

In the second, Yabs netted his second of the night off a feed from Brendan Mercier. Coming off a Kalamzaoo goal, sophomores Stearns and Marcus Haynie scored for the Britons. A second Hornet goal was answered from one by Mercier, giving the visitors a 7-2 lead at the half. 

Albion's three third quarter goals came from its upperclassmen in Montgomery, Mercier and Ethan Rottell. In the fourth, Haynie, Vaughn Shewell and freshman Carson Stavros all scored for the Brits. 

Howell earns his first collegiate victory in his first start. Haynie picked up a team-best seven ground balls, as Robbie Dameron was 9 of 16 from the faceoff X and tallied five ground balls. 

On Saturday, the Britons will host Trine University for Senior Day. First faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. with senior festivities to take place in pregame.
