Career days lift football to win in 2024 debut

ALBION – Bookending the game with interceptions, the Albion College football team opened its 2024 season with a 31-23 win over UW-Stevens Point. Luke Lovell threw for 357 yards on a 28 of 39 day, good for three touchdowns and no picks.

Fifth year senior Aiden Adams had a career day with six catches for 96 yards, as Cameron Moore's seven receptions for 83 yards were also a career-best.

After a scoreless first quarter, Albion used a 70 yard drive to take the lead with 7:33 before the half. Set up by long passes to Adams and Dorian Armstrong, the drive ended with a 5-yard pass to Adams in the end zone. Logan Grwinski's PAT was good for a 7-0 advantage.

The visitors immediately responded before the Brits regained the lead before the break. Aided by a Pointer penalty, junior Tayshaun Nichols exploded for a 20-yard rush, pushing Albion ahead 14-7 at halftime.

Grwinski nailed a 20-yard field goal, but UWSP answered with back to back scores for a 20-17 lead. In the waning seconds of the third quarter, Lovell found Dilon Denison in the back of the end zone for a 6-yard strike, lifting the Brits to a 24-20 lead.

Albion extended its lead with its final score of the day – a 4-yard find to Trevor Smith

With the Pointers threatening late in the game, Mitch Raphael stepped in front of a UWSP pass for a game-winning interception with just over a minute on the clock. He and DJ Dandridge each picked off a pass in the win.

Defensively, junior Adam Mills had a career afternoon with 10 total tackles, one for loss.

Next Saturday, Albion hosts Bluffton for a 1 p.m. kickoff and the 30th anniversary celebration of the 1994 National Championship.
