Western sweeps Sunday doubleheader

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Claiming High Point Team honors in both shows, the Albion College western equestrian team swept their doubleheader on Sunday. 

In the morning show, the Brits were the High Point Team as Carli Kerns was named the High Point Rider and Jenna Smith was the Reserve High Point Rider. Kerns later was named the Reserve High Point Rider in the afternoon show. 

Kerns started the day off for the Brits by placing second in Open Reining. Albion then went on to place in three spots in Level II Horsemanship, led by Ella Lou Farwell's win. Anastasia Kiser was third and Riley Long finished fourth. 

Senior Katelyn Proshek won in Level I Horsemanship and then in Open Horsemanship, Kerns picked up another victory with Smith taking third and Madison Weedon fourth. Claire Stier was fourth in Rookie B Horsemanship while Madison Verkest was third in Rookie A. Winning Beginner Horsemanship was Raymundo Robles.

Ending the morning show, Smith won Level II Ranch Riding and Anna Divis took fourth. In the show, Divis qualified for Regionals in Level II Ranch Riding. 

In the afternoon show with Kerns leading the way, the senior placed fifth in Open Reining. 

Kiser went on to win Level II Horsemanship, as Farwell (third) and Amelia Otten (sixth) also placed in the event. Albion received a fourth place finish in both sections of Level I Horsemanship, with Proshek in the third section and Kailey Kowalchuk in the second. 

Paige Tschirhart was the runner-up in Rookie A Horsemanship, as Abigail Nevins was fourth in the event. In the other Rookie A section, Verkest placed second. In Rookie B, Sequoia Meyer and Avery Vick went 2-3 for the Brits in their section, while Stier was third in hers. 

Kerns earned another victory on the day, winning Open Horsemanship. Divis was fourth in the event. In the other section of Open Horsemanship, Weedon and Smith finished fourth and sixth, respectively. 

Robles was third in Beginner Horsemanship. Smith followed by winning Level II Ranch Riding and Ainslie Schlagel was third, seeing Otten take fifth. 

Kerns qualified for Regionals in Open Reining in the show. 

Albion continues to lead the region heading into the final regular season show of the year. Albion will host Feb. 15-16.
