Men's wrestling dominates Dawgs

Gary Iobe's pin at 197 sealed the MIAA victory for Albion.

ADRIAN, Mich. – Gary Iobe delivered one of the biggest moments in his Albion career. With a second period pin at 197, Iobe secured the Albion College men's wrestling team's 29-11 win over Adrian College.

Jeremy Sarter got the dual started with a 10-3 victory at 125. A narrow loss and a tech fall saw the Britons trailing 8-3 through three bouts. Max Honiss – ranked fourth regionally at 149 – delivered a massive win for the visitors. A gritty bout ended with Honiss winning by a slim 3-2 margin.

After the Bulldogs won at 157, Albion would go on to win the next five matchups. In a tightly contested 165 bout that was 1-0 for most of the time, Peyton Brooks got a late takedown to walk away with a 4-0 victory. With four matches remaining, the Brits trailed 11-9.

Freshman Zak Knapp continued to impress at 174. Ranked fourth in the region, Knapp vaulted the Britons ahead for good with a 7-4 victory. At 184, Owen McDaniel dominated his way to five crucial points in a 21-5 tech fall. Heading into the bout, the senior was ranked third in the region.

Adrian opted to bump Blake Williams – the top ranked wrestler in the region – up to 197. Iobe was much prepared for the task, pinning Williams in just 3:17. With six points to Albion's lead and a flex to his teammates, Iobe claimed the MIAA match for the Brits.

To put an exclamation point on the event, CJ Krum earned his second straight MIAA pin in 3:32.

Albion improves to 2-0 in the league midway through the conference slate. Next Thursday, the Britons head to No. 21 Olivet for a 7 p.m. dual.
