ALBION, Mich. -- It was a major test for the Albion volleyball team.
Facing 20-3 Calvin at the Kresge Gymnasium for the first time since the Britons earned a 3-1 victory over the Knights in 2023, who were nationally ranked in the top 10 at the time, they dropped the 2025 version of the match, 3-1 (19-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-16).
Albion's only lead in the first set came when it was 3-2 early on. Calvin maintained their advantage throughout the entire stanza and racked up 17 kills while forcing the Britons to hit .077.
The Britons were not able to notch a lead in the second set. They made it a one-point set on two different occasions after both teams hit the 20-point mark, but after a
Margaret Jones ace to pull within one, 24-23, Calvin called a timeout and shut the door with a kill on the next rally.
Albion gathered momentum in the third set, as they took their first consistent lead after scoring eight consecutive points to make it 15-8 before a Calvin timeout. The first five points of the sequence were courtesy of
Kayda Herrick kills.
Back-to-back attack errors from the Knights a few points later made it a 19-9 advantage for Albion, but Calvin fought back and eventually made it 22-20, but two
Bri Whitfield kills sealed the set later on.
It was Albion's best set defensively, as they forced 10 attack errors and a -.020 hitting percentage for the visitors.
Calvin busted out of their slump in the fourth, as they never allowed Albion to take an advantage. The Knights hit their best in the fourth at a .375 clip while forcing the Britons to hit just .053 with nine combined errors.
Herrick had a career-high 22 kills and hit .372 while
Bri Whitfield added 10 kills on 49 attacks.
Paige Williamson collected 26 digs, while
Molly Edmunds dished out 35 assists.
