Volleyball’s Bid For MIAA Title Falls Short Against Calvin

HOLLAND, Mich. – In their quest to reach the MIAA Championship for just the second time in program history, the Albion volleyball team fell short.

The No. 3-seeded Britons lost to No. 2-seeded Calvin, 3-0 (18-25, 21-25, 18-25), at Hope's DeVos Fieldhouse in the MIAA Tournament Semifinals.

Albion began the first set leading throughout most of the first half of the stanza. Their largest lead was 12-8 courtesy of a Margaret Jones kill.

After a 14-12 advantage, the Knights began to chip away at the Britons' lead. Four straight points allowed them to gain a 17-14 lead, and while Albion made it 19-17, Calvin shut the door and notched six of the game's final seven points.

Once again, the Britons held a lead early in the second going up 6-4 after scoring five consecutive points. However, the Knights took the advantage for good with six straight points that eventually lead to the set victory.

The Britons never led in the third. The closest they ever got was 11-9 and later when they scored four straight points to pull within three, 21-18. Calvin then proceeded to take the next four and secure the sweep.

Kayda Herrick, who received first-team All-MIAA honors earlier in the day, registered a team-high nine kills while Bri Whitfield had eight. Second-team All-MIAA selection Paige Williamson led the squad in digs with 16 and had three aces.

As a team, Albion made 25 attack errors compared to the Knights' 11.

The Britons will await their fate for a potential at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. The selection show takes place on Monday, November 17 at 1 p.m. streaming on ncaa.com.
