NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- In a dramatic finish, the Albion College women's basketball edged Concordia-Chicago 88–84 in overtime on Saturday, securing their third straight win of the season behind a clutch performance from
Meghan Trewhella.
The Britons (3–0) attacked early and often, but the Cougars' pace kept the first half tight. After trading baskets through two quarters, Albion seized control coming out of the locker room. The Britons opened the third with energy, pushed the ball inside, and shot 8-for-12 in the period. They also converted all five of their free throws, turning a one-possession game into a two-score lead that held for most of the second half.
Concordia-Chicago mounted a late rally in the fourth, closing the gap on back-to-back baskets, but Albion's poise paid off. The Britons went to the free-throw line with the lead in the final seconds, knocking down key shots to force overtime.
In the extra period, Albion jumped out quickly behind
Ava Guilford. The senior knocked down a pair form beyond the arc and then swiped the ball to feed
Anna Honnen for layup that pushed Albion ahead, 80-77. As both sides vied for an advantage, Concordia-Chicago pulled back within two with 16 seconds to play. The Britons were unfazed, however, as Trewhella and Guilford knocked down a combined five free throws late to seal the win.
When the final horn sounded, Trewhella finished with a career-high 35 points and nine rebounds.
Payton Baker added 15 points and team-high six assists, while Guilford registered a double-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds, and five steals. Nine of the senior's 14 points came in the crucial overtime period. Honnen added 11 points on a tidy 5-for-6 shooting performance from the floor. Albion out-rebounded the Cougars, 44-32, and controlled the glass throughout key points of the game.
