ALBION, Mich. -- The Albion College women's basketball team fell to DePauw University in a hard-fought non-conference tilt inside of Kresge Gymnasium on Tuesday evening, 77-66.
The Britons (7-2) came racing out the gates with a 10-2 run over the first four minutes of the contest. The Tigers (4-4) overcame the early barrage and cut Albion's lead to one with just under two minutes left in the period.
Ava Guilford halted the mini-run from the visitors with a steal and an acrobatic finish through a foul to re-establish the Brits' lead at 14-11.
The two sides traded baskets for a majority of the second quarter, as the Tigers chipped away at Albion's advantage. The visitors snuck ahead with just over a minute to play at 28-27, but the Britons answered immediately with a driving layup from
Anyieth Nhial. DePauw struck on more time before the end of the half to take a slim 30-29 lead into the break.
As fast as Albion started the tilt, DePauw matched the intensity coming out of the halftime break. The Tigers shot nearly 58% from the floor in the quarter and opened the stanza with 12 straight points and entered the fourth quarter with a 55-47 advantage.
DePauw's big third quarter proved to be the difference as Albion battled back in the final period.
Guilford and
Meghan Trewhella knocked down a pair of shots from deep to open make it a 58-53 game.
Both sides continued to find the bottom of the net, and a jumper from
Payton Baker made it a four-point game, 68-64, with just over two minutes to play. The comeback was not to be for the Britons, however, as DePauw's advantage proved too much to overcome.
Trewhella led the way for Brits with 17 points with marks of 60% (6-for-10) from the floor and 75% (3-for-4) from beyond the arc. Guilford poured in 15 points and team-highs in both rebounds (8) and assists (5). First-year forward
Alexis Trine rounded out the Britons in double figures with a career-best 12 points on 85.7% (6-for-7) shooting.
As a team, Albion shot 42.2% (27-for-64) from field goal range. The Tigers narrowly edged Albion on the glass, 39-34.
