WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- The Albion College men's basketball team snapped a two-game skid on Monday evening with a commanding 83-63 victory over Westminster College to open the Smokey Ballenger Classic at Otterbein University.
The tilt marked the second time that Albion (6-4) battled the Titans this season (5-4), as the Britons earned a 90-60 win over Westminster in November.
A balanced led to the comfortable win for Albion, as four Britons finished in double figures.
Kam Mayes led the charge with 19 points and six rebounds on 7-for-10 (70.0%) shooting from the floor.
Kurtis Rhodes, fresh off setting a new career-high last time out against Aurora University, tallied 17 points with a 58.3% (7-for-12) mark from the floor.
Michael Umeh and
Mason Brodi rounded out the Britons in double digits, with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Umeh finished the contest with a team-high seven rebounds.
Albion led nearly wire-to-wire against the Titans, as the Brits held the advantage for 32:32 of the non-conference tilt. A 12-0 run in the first half broke the game open for Albion. With the score at 28-16, Brodi kickstarted the barrage with back-to-back makes in the paint. A three-point make from
Truman King and a lay-in from Rhodes capped the run as Albion opened a 24-point lead with two minutes to go in the first half. T
The Titans' offense fared slightly better in the second frame with 40 points, but Albion kept up its strong shooting in the second stanza with a 57.7% (15-for-26) mark from the floor. The early lead and consistent approach from field goal goal range proved to be enough as the Britons cruised to the win.
