ALBION, Mich. -- The Albion College women's basketball team kept its hot start to the campaign rolling on Wednesday evening in its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener with a 56-44 win over Kalamazoo.
With the win, Albion continued its undefeated start to the season, as the Britons improved to 6-0. Kalamazoo fell to 1-5 on the year.
Turnovers loomed large over the tilt, as Albion's defensive intensity kept the Hornets off balance. The Britons forced Kalamazoo into a whopping 26 turnovers, which they turned into 27 points. That defensive effort allowed the Brits to lead for 39:34 of the contest.
Albion opened the first quarter on a 10-3 run over the first six minutes to jump ahead of the Hornets. The Brits shot 50% from the floor during the frame to jump ahead. After the early run, Kalamazoo clawed back, but
DJ Pannell knocked down a big three-pointer to keep Albion ahead heading into the second quarter.
Kalamazoo battled back in the second frame, and the Hornets pulled within one point at 15-14. Albion responded with a 6-2 run to regain the lead. As the clock wound to halftime, the Brits pummeled Kalamazoo with a 10-3 run over a four-minute time-span to jump ahead, 29-19. Trewhella and
Payton Baker added four points apiece to blitz Kalamazoo, as Albion took its 10-point lead into halftime.
Albion kept its foot on the gas in the third quarter. A three-pointer from
Ava Guilford pushed the Britons ahead, 41-26 at the media timeout with 4:33 left in the period. Both sides slowed from there, as each defense ratcheted up the pressure, and the conference foes started the fourth quarter with the score at 41-29.
With the lead in hand, Albion fended off Kalamazoo down the stretch.
Khaleeya Cook netted seven points over the frame to help the Brits stay ahead. With 20 seconds to play, Trewhella dropped in a layup to put the game officially out of reach.
Albion's offense was led by the trio of Trewhella, Cook, and Baker. Trewhella scored a game-high 18 points, while Cook and Baker finished with 15 and 11 points, respectively. Cook added eight rebounds and five steals which marked a new career-best, while Baker finished with five boards and three assists.
