Freshmen power MLAX over North Central

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Backed by five goals from freshmen, the Albion College men's lacrosse team held on for an 8-6 victory over North Central College. Logan Mozingo and Luke Schuemann each scored twice while Mathieu Champoux added one.

With a first quarter goal, Brendan Mercier reached the 100 career point milestone. He became the second Briton this week to reach a milestone, as Cal Stearns hit 100 career goals on Wednesday.

Albion took a 3-2 lead into the second quarter, thanks to goals by Mozingo, Mercier and Stearns. The Britons shut out the Cardinals in the second quarter, with goals coming from Schuemann and Champoux. In the period, Mercier added an assist for his second point of the afternoon. 

The Cardinals struck twice in the third to cut Albion's lead to 5-4. The Britons immediately responded when Fabrizio Raciti connected with Mozingo for the freshman's second goal of the day. Schuemann and Raciti scored late in the third, pushing Albion's lead to three heading into the final 15 minutes. 

Freshman Connor Laidlaw turned in a 62 percent at the faceoff X, winning 9 of 14 and picking up five ground balls. Defensively, Will Tessin caused a team-high five turnovers and Raciti's four caused turnovers were a new career-best. Six Brits caused at least two turnovers in the win.

In goal, Caleb Howell earned the win, as Jack Erickson came in clutch, logging seven saves in nearly 20 minutes of action.

Albion held a slight edge in shots (39-37) and ground balls (42-39).

Albion will have a quick turnaround as the team is back on Alumni Field tomorrow. Elmhurst visits the Brits for a 1 p.m. faceoff.
