Brits open MIAA action with win

ALBION – Drew Renner's clutch gene earned the senior a big save, leading the Albion College baseball team to a 7-6 victory over Kalamazoo College. Renner came in with the bases loaded in the eighth inning, getting the Hornet 5-hitter to strikeout. 

Albion exploded for six runs in the bottom of the second in their home opener. Austyn Stephens started with a single off the Kalamazoo pitcher and scored when Jack Lasceski ripped a double to the wall in left center. Two batters later, Lasceski came home on an Evan Schuster single. 

Carson Dunn beat out a bunt for a base hit, loading the bases for the top of the lineup. Rykey Mazey continued the momentum with an RBI single up the middle for a 3-0 lead. Braeden Emery drew a bases loaded walk and Kris Stojanovski was plunked before one more run came in on a double play for a 6-0 lead through two. 

Albion's final run came in the seventh when Dunn crushed a no-doubt solo shot to left. 

The Hornets struggled against Cole Giesige (4-1). Giesige tossed 6+ innings, allowing just two runs and striking out seven. 

Kalamazoo rallied for five runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth, forcing Albion to turn to Renner. Renner got the strikeout with the bases loaded to end the eighth, before stranding the tying run in scoring position in the ninth. 

The Brits move to 7-8 on the season, 1-0 in the MIAA. Kalamazoo drops to 12-5, 0-1.

Tomorrow's games at Kalamazoo have been pushed up to escape the rain. Game times are now scheduled for 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
