Ninth inning rally, Giesige's CG lifts baseball over Calvin

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A ninth inning rally and a patented Goose Shove Day helped the Albion College baseball team win game one of the series, knocking off Calvin 5-2. The Britons broke a 2-2 tie in the ninth, plating three runs – plenty of cushion for Cole Giesige

Giesige (6-2) went the distance, striking out 10 batters over nine innings. He allowed just one walk and a pair of runs. Evan Schuster hit the go-ahead double in the ninth and freshman Carter Stahl provided the knockout punch – a two-run double.

Three Brits finished with three hits – Braeden Emery, Austyn Stephens and Stahl.

Albion scored first in the third inning, courtesy of a passed ball by the Knights. Calvin tied it up in the bottom of the fourth with two extra base hits, as the pitcher's duel was as advertised. In the seventh, Emery roped a one-out double to right center and two batters later came in to score when Stephens smacked a line drive up the middle.

Calvin immediately answered with a solo home run in the seventh, tying the game at 2-2.

Emery led off the ninth with a double, immediately setting up the Britons. Schuster – who was robbed of extra bases his previous at bat after a fantastic Calvin catch – drove in the go-ahead run with a double to right center.

With the bases loaded and one away, Stahl drove a ball deep to center, driving in Schuster and Stephens for a 5-2 lead.

The Brits will host the doubleheader of the series on Friday with games scheduled at 2 and 5 p.m.
