GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- In a game that featured a tie score on six occasions and seven lead changes, the Albion College men's basketball team narrowly fell to the Knights of Calvin University, 80-77 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play at Van Noord Arena.
Albion (8-7, 1-3 MIAA) was paced by a pair of standout performances in the paint as
Michael Umeh and
Kam Mayes each recorded double-doubles. Umeh finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Mayes posted 14 points and 11 rebounds in the tightly contested matchup.
After trading early leads, the Britons and Knights battled through a back-and-forth first half, with Albion holding a slim 36-33 advantage at the break. Calvin (12-3, 4-0 MIAA) responded in the second half, using efficient scoring and timely free throws to pull ahead in the final minutes. Albion shot 41.3% ( 26-for-63) from the floor and connected on 52.2% (12-for-23) of its 3-point attempts, but Calvin's late execution ultimately decided the game
Albion's balanced attack featured 14 points from
Mason Brodi and 12 points from
Dwayne Ray. Calvin's Jalen Overway led all scorers with a game-high 32 points, and Trevin Winkle added 18 as the Knights capitalized on late free throws.
