Britons Bested by Bulldogs in Return to MIAA Action

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Albion College women's basketball team put together a balanced offensive effort but couldn't recover from a decisive third-quarter surge by Adrian College, as the Britons fell 70–62 in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) action Saturday afternoon at the Merillat Center.

Albion built an eight-point lead at 30-22 heading into the halftime break, but the turning point came out of halftime. The Bulldogs came out firing in the third period and outscored Albion 30–16 in the period behind an 84.6% (11-for-13) mark from the floor and a blistering 83.3% (5-for-6) clip from beyond the arc. Adrian's efficiency stretched the lead into double digits and forced Albion to play from behind for the remainder of the contest.

The Brits hung tough amidst the barrage and battled back in the fourth quarter. A make from Payton Baker and a pair of free throws from Khaleeya Cook cut Adrian's lead to two, 54-52, with just over seven minutes to play. Adrian continued to find success however, as the two sides traded baskets as time wound down. A layup from Meghan Trewhella pulled the Britons back within four points, 62-58, with 2:28 on the clock, but that was as close Albion would get as the conference tilt came to a close.

As a team, Albion shot 42.1% (24-for-57) from field goal range and finished wiht a slim 35-34 advantage on the glass. Trewhella finished with a team-high 18 points and four steals. Cook narrowly missed a double-double with 16 points and nine boards. Ava Guilford and Baker rounded out Albion's double-digit scorers with 14 and 11 points, respectively. The two seniors pulled down six rebounds and dished three assists each.
