ALBION, Mich. – The all-time series between Albion and Alma was deadlocked at 47-47 heading into their showdown.
The Britons broke the knot, as they muscled their way past the Scots 72-63 at Kresge Gymnasium and outscored Alma 43-29 in the second half.
Albion found themselves down 18-13 after the first. The Scots went on a 6-0 run to close out the period.
The Britons took their second lead of quarter No. 2 on a three-pointer from
Payton Baker to make it 22-20 with 6:26 left, but Alma answered right back with a triple of their own to retake the advantage for the rest of the half and outscore Albion 14-7.
The MIAA's leading scorer,
Meghan Trewhella, had just two points (both on free throws) in the first half.
Alma kept their momentum going in the third, jumping out to an 11-point lead, 42-31, three minutes in.
However, Albion began to chip away at the advantage on a 16-3 run to take their first lead of the half, 47-45, with 2:25 left and ended the stanza up 51-49.
Alma opened the fourth on a 7-0 run, but the Britons tied it up on a Trewhella layup, 58-58, with 5:56 remaining.
A Trewhella free throw and two Scots points from the charity stripe later, Albion found themselves down by one.
It was all Britons from there, as
Deziray Skirka made a layup with just under five minutes to go to regain the lead for good.
Skirka started what would be a 10-0 Albion run and allowed just three points the rest of the way.
Trewhella ended up scoring 21 second-half points, including three triples, and added seven rebounds.
Ava Guilford, who played all 40 minutes, notched 17 points and five assists, while
Payton Baker chipped in 10.
All five starters played at least 30 minutes, and the team committed just nine turnovers – a season-low and least amount in a conference game since January 24, 2024, at Hope.
