KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The Albion men's lacrosse team got back to their winning ways and secured a gritty, 8-7 victory over Kalamazoo.
The Britons opened the game with four goals in the first quarter, with
Cal Stearns striking twice and
Logan Bride and
Logan Mozingo each finding twine.
Steady defense guided Albion throughout the remainder of the half, but the Hornets notched two goals of their own at the 12:27 and 4:48 marks to cut the deficit to 4-2 headed into the locker room.
Less than 30 seconds into the third, Kalamazoo got within one and a minute and a half later knotted the score at four apiece.
Mathieu Champoux did get a goal back for Albion, but the Hornets swarmed back with two consecutive scores to take their first lead of the game.
With 3:08 left in the stanza,
Luke Schuemann tied the score once more as it was 6-6 at the end of the third.
Kalamazoo took the advantage again less than two minutes into the fourth. However, Albion got a goal six seconds later off the faceoff from Laidlaw to Stearns to knot it at 7-7.
After a Hornet failed clear with 6:46 remaining, the Britons got an offensive possession and took full advantage as Stearns struck from the left side off a pass from
TJ Antonino which proved to be the winning score.
Luke Szymanski made four of his nine saves in the final 6:30 of the game after Stearns scored his game winner. Overall, Albion picked up 43 ground balls to Kalamazoo's 32 — including a career-best seven from
Ethan Barker who also had two caused turnovers.
Stearns notched four goals, while
Caleb Howell started in net and registered seven saves.
