ALBION, Mich. — In a game that featured 12 ties and seven lead changes, the Albion men's lacrosse team came out on top in their MIAA Tournament First Round matchup, 19-14, against the No. 6 seed Adrian at Alumni Field.
After being down by two goals twice in the third, the Britons shut down the Bulldogs in the fourth and outscored them, 7-0.
Coming into the tournament as the No. 3 seed for the second consecutive year, the Britons allowed the game's first goal 10:20 into the opening quarter. From there,
Logan Mozingo notched their initial score 15 seconds later as the contest saw two more ties and lead changes in the opening period.
TJ Antonino and Mozingo totaled the Briton goals in the timeframe, and Adrian held onto a 4-3 advantage at the end of the first.
Luke Schuemann capitalized on a man-up opportunity to even up the score in the second, and
Connor Laidlaw notched a goal off a faceoff to reclaim the lead, 5-4.
The Bulldogs notched two scores off man-up opportunities and took the lead back, 7-6, with 9:01 left in the half. Then, Schuemann struck once more and
Mathieu Champoux found twine with 6:49 remaining to make the score once again in favor of the Britons.
Two more goals came for Adrian to close out the half up 9-8.
Both teams continued to trade blows in the third. Schuemann opened the period with a goal, while the Bulldogs took advantage of a man-up opportunity and regained the lead, 10-9.
They increased their lead to two on another score less than a minute and a half later.
Then, Mozingo and Schuemann teammed up to provide two goals to get the Britons back in the game as they knotted it up, 11-11.
Adrian then scored three of the period's final four goals to take another two-goal lead into the fourth.
Schuemann used a pass from
Logan Bride to find twine to begin the fourth. Then, Schuemann delivered a ball into the back of the net on a man-up goal to tie it up at 14-14.
It was all Britons from there.
Just 13 seconds later off a faceoff,
Logan Bride picked up the ground ball, drove in on net and fired a shot past the Adrian goalie to take the lead for good.
Mozingo, Pipesh, and Schuemann (twice) rounded out the rest of the scoring for the Britons.
Albion picked up 32 ground balls and forced 21 Bulldog turnovers. Schuemann registered a career-high eight goals, while Mozingo picked up four.
Caleb Howell made eight saves in net playing in three quarters, while
Luke Szymanski made three playing primarily in the second period.
