HOLLAND, Mich. — Morgan Hurd became the third Albion athlete to win the hammer throw at the MIAA Championships to lead the Britons on the first day of competition at Hope's Brewer Outdoor Track.
After fouling off her first two attempts, the junior posted a mark of 42.47m on her third attempt to lead her to the finals. From there, each attempt was further than the last culminating with a winning mark of 46.07m on her final toss.
The mark bested the competition by almost two meters and was the third best in program history.
Hurd's 10 points for the victory added to the Britons' 21 as a team, which sat them in fifth. Calvin (78) led the field following Day 1.
Mia Czarnowski also scored points in the long jump, as she took fourth (5.33m). The sophomore also competed in the 100m (12.83) and 200m (26.87), placing 11
th and 12
th, respectively.
Mia Carone also took fourth in the pole vault (3.10m) to round out the Albion scorers.
In prelims,
Malea Wourman punched her ticket to the 400m finals with a sixth place showing (59.43).
Brianna Bennett also earned a spot in the finals of the 400m hurdles by also finishing in sixth (1:09.29).
Taylor Adams placed 16
th in the 800m (2:31.93), while Veronicca Paniccia was also 16
th in the 3,000m steeplechase (12:55.56).
In throws,
Melody Hisey came in 12
th in the shot put (10.39m), while
Leilani Casteele finished eighth in the hammer throw (40.39m).
