Albion, Mich. - The Albion Football team came up short in their home opener vs. Illinois Wesleyan with a final score of 10-24 on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman quarterback
Jackson Volz threw for 172 yards, going 16-28, in his debut for the Britons. Tight End
Amarr Hunter led the Brits with 83 receiving yards on four receptions, with one of those going for 53 yards.
Alex Trudell led the Brits rushing with 22 attempts for 59 yards and the lone touchdown for the Brits.
Senior
Devon Buskin Jr. had a stand out night recording 12 tackles and forcing a fumble.
Isaac Rehberg recorded nine tackles and two fumble recoveries while
Jordan Davis recorded one sack for 10 yards.
The Britons struck first with a 32 yard field goal by
Spencer Berkeypile after the defense was able to recover a fumble and set the Britons up at the Titans 14 yard line. Strong defense from the Titans forced the Brits to take the three. The first half would remain a defensive battle as neither teams offense could get much going. The Britons would get close to adding to their lead in the final seconds of the first half, however the Titans defense held strong and we entered the half 3-0.
The Titans came out of the half looking to finally get points on the board. On their opening drive of the half, they would go down and score a touchdown to take the lead 7-3. The Britons would continue to battle and midway through the third,
Alex Trudell would find the end zone with a five yard rushing touchdown to give the Britons the lead 10-7. The Titans would responded with a field goal of their own tying the game at 10-10 as we headed to the fourth quarter.
The Titans would go down and score on their first drive of the fourth to put them up 17-10, with under 10 minutes to play in the game. The Brits would struggle to get their offense going, but their defense continued to give them opportunities as
Dewayne Williams and
Aidan Quinn would combine for a big sack to force the Titans to punt the ball away with just 2:30 left on the clock. The Britons would continue their offensive struggles and would punt the ball away with just 1:11 left on the clock. The Britons defense would try and continue their stand, however the Titans would find a seam and score a touchdown with just 53 seconds on the clock. The Brits would make one last attempt at closing the gap but would come up just short and turn it over on downs with just three seconds on the clock.
The Britons will look to bounce back on Saturday September 12th as they face the Thunder of Wheaton at 12PM.
