Box Score TIFFIN, Ohio – Albion College thrived in back-to-back matches played in steamy conditions because every player contributed. Saturday was a prime example as substitutes Josh Deuel (Dowagiac) and Tom Dickmann (Battle Creek/Lakeview) combined for a goal in the 104th minute to lift the Britons to a 1-0 victory over Heidelberg University.
Dickmann's long throw-in sailed over the head of Heidelberg goalkeeper Ryan Smith, and Deuel was in position to tally his first collegiate goal. The Heidelberg players argued that a defender had cleared the ball off the goal line, but the referees credited Deuel with the goal and the Britons with the win.
It was another solid effort by the Albion defense as it limited Heidelberg to three shots.
"Everybody I put in is ready to play," Albion Coach Jerry Block said. "We are playing defense as a unit. Our forwards are doing a good job of making it difficult for the opponent to get field position."
Deuel and starters Kurt Miller (Ann Arbor/Dexter) and Antonio Pacifico (Harrison Township/East Detroit) were credited with two shots apiece.
Albion, off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2005, returns home Tuesday for a non-league contest against Manchester (Ind.) College. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at Alumni Field.
