ALBION, Mich. – Albion College lost its confidence after its 2-1 first-inning lead evaporated and it failed to score after Taylor Tuszynski (Bridgman) hit a leadoff double in the second inning. The Britons went on to lose both games of a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association softball doubleheader to Saint Mary's College by scores of 14-6 and 6-3.
Kaitlyn Downey (Macomb/Dakota) hit a two-run double to the gap in right-center to give Albion the early lead in game one. Saint Mary's came back with two runs in the top of the second, and the momentum clearly shifted to the Belles after Albion failed to score in the second. Tuszynski was sacrificed to third, but the scoring threat fizzled as the Britons were unable to hit the ball out of the infield.
Albion would go without a hit until the sixth, but Saint Mary's had extended the margin to 14-2 by that time. Downey opened the inning with a double, Claire Cannon (Clinton Township/Chippewa Valley) drew a walk, Alyssa Castillo (Hamilton) reached on an error, and Stefana Russo (Sterling Heights/Stevenson) hit a RBI single. After an out, Sophie Nielsen (Niles) produced a RBI single.
Albion also scored first in game two. Russo reached on an error with one out in the second inning and two wild pitches and a single by Nielsen helped her advance around the diamond.
Downey retired the first six batters but the Albion defense faltered in the third. The first batter hit an infield popup that was dropped and the runner advanced to second when the Briton infielder made a bad throw to first base. The next four batters reached, as well, and Saint Mary's went on to score five times.
Saint Mary's added a run in the fourth to build a 6-2 lead.
Albion brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the seventh, but it was not able to string enough hits together.
Nielsen and Downey produced three hits and two runs batted in apiece. Samantha Kolling (Monclova, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) also collected three hits.
