KENTWOOD, Mich. – Erin Giannotta (Saint Clair Shores/Regina) and Kaitlyn Downey (Macomb/Dakota) threw complete games as Albion College earned 3-0 and 3-1 victories over Calvin College in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association softball action.
The Briton pitchers combined to strikeout nine while yielding seven hits and two walks. Giannotta threw a four-hitter with six strikeouts for her third shutout of the season in game one. Lina Avila touched Giannotta for a pair of doubles. Avila was caught trying to steal third base in the second inning and she was stranded at third in the seventh.
Downey retired the first 11 batters in order, and her no-hit bid was broken up when Marie Prins' single to rightfield. Downey finished with a three-hitter, and a leadoff walk to Catherine Hilbrands in the fifth was the only run Calvin would score all day. Downey also produced at the plate, collecting three hits and a walk and scoring twice.
Albion scored right away in game one as Kara Wandrie (Clarkston) slapped a leadoff single to the shortstop. She was sacrificed to second and scored on Samantha Kolling's (Monclova, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) single. The Britons tacked on two more runs in the sixth as Kolling laced a double down the left field line and Downey and Claire Cannon (Clinton Township/Chippewa Valley) produced RBI singles.
An error allowed the leadoff batter to reach base in the second inning and that helped Albion gain the lead in game two. Alyssa Castillo (Hamilton) and Downey scored on a single by Stefana Russo (Sterling Heights/Stevenson). Kolling grounded into a fielder's choice in the third but it was enough to push Wandrie across the plate.
Albion, which won three of four to start MIAA play, hosts Kalamazoo College for a 3:30 p.m. Wednesday doubleheader at Dempsey Field.
