First Half Runs Doom Albion

Box Score

KALAMAZOO – Kalamazoo broke open what had been a tie game with an 11-0 run and it buried Albion with a 10-0 run. The two spurts propelled Kalamazoo to a 78-71 victory over Albion in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association men's basketball action inside the Anderson Athletic Center.

Aaron Schoenfeldt scored two layups and a free throw during Kalamazoo's 11-0 run that turned a 10-10 game with 13 minutes left in the first half into a 21-10 Hornet lead five minutes later. Mark Ghafari knocked down a pair of 3-point baskets as Kalamazoo extended the margin to 20 with less than two minutes left in the first half.

Albion did not go quietly into the night, however, as Chris Hutton scored five points and Jordan Herron added four during the Britons' 14-6 run to trim the deficit to seven, 47-40, three minutes into the second half.

Albion got as close as three with four minutes to play. Herron's jumper in the paint trimmed the Kalamazoo lead to 66-63.

Kalamazoo never surrendered the lead as Mark Oravetz completed an old-fashioned three-point play and Grant Carey finished a layup.

Ghafari led all players with 22 points and he pulled down nine rebounds. Eric Fishman fell an assist shy of a double-double, finishing with 14 points. Carey tacked on 11 points for the Hornets.

Four of Albion's starters scored in double figures, led by Eric Evans' 16. Hutton chipped in with 14, Zach Hurth produced 11, and Herron finished with 10.
