Box Score ALBION, Mich. – Albion College's late-season surge toward securing a berth in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Men's Soccer Tournament was slowed Tuesday when it played to a 2-2 draw with Alma College at Alumni Field.
The Britons, who boast a 4-6-2 record against league rivals, trail fourth-place Kalamazoo College by two points with a Saturday home date with Adrian College and a Nov. 5 contest at Calvin College remaining.
Albion scored its goals in the first 17 minutes of the contest. Mike Tolkacz was involved in both scoring plays as he assisted on Andrew Byrne's tally in the third minute and he got his head on Colin Howard's cross in the 17th minute.
Alma put its speedy midfielder Matt Sovis to work and he sent passes to Aaron Griffin and Tyler Raab for a pair of goals in a 10-minute stretch.
While there was no scoring for the final 76 minutes, the teams had chances. Albion's best scoring opportunity came with four minutes remaining in regulation when Charles Micunek attempted to place a header in the upper corner of the goal. Alma goalkeeper Brett Galloway stopped Micunek's shot, and Albion midfielder Bobby Budlong sent the rebound wide of the goal.
Galloway was credited with seven saves, while Albion goalkeeper Kieran O'Keefe stopped three Alma shots.
Albion finished the match with a 14-11 edge in shots. Budlong was credited with four shots, placing two on goal. Kyle Alsheskie, Byrne, and Tolkacz all collected two shots.
