Albion Rolls Into MIAA Tournament Title Game

Box Score

ALBION, Mich. – Albion College scored from close and long range and Kyle Formanczyk made 10 saves in the 50 minutes he was on the field as the Britons rolled into the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Men's Lacrosse Tournament final with a 14-4 victory over Trine University in front of a loud and supportive student section at Sprankle-Sprandel Stadium.

"We focused a lot about how tonight could have been our last game of the season," Albion Coach Jake DeCola said after his team improved to 11-5 on the year. "The players were mindful of what was at stake and they played a good game.

"As we look ahead to (the MIAA Tournament championship game at Adrian College) Saturday we're going to focus on playing another good game and potentially extending our season," he added.

Dan Genord scored less than three minutes into the contest to give Albion the early lead, but it was a three-goal rush in the final 4 ½ minutes of the first quarter that sent the Britons on a roll. Stephen Treppa scored his fourth goal of the season and assisted on a Tim Urso tally and Genord struck for his second goal of the quarter.

Trine scored in the opening seconds of the second quarter, but Albion would tack on the next five goals to build a 9-1 lead. The key play was a three-minute non-releasable penalty and Albion took advantage with goals by Cameron Braun and Urso.

Genord finished with five goals to bring his career scoring total to more than 100. Urso added four goals.

"The guys were clicking," DeCola said. "When you shoot outside that opens the opportunity for the inside guys like Genord to get free. We were able to shoot from the perimeter and force the defense to move."

Albion will need the type of production it received from the perimeter against Trine when it challenges Adrian with an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Championship hanging in the balance. Genord, who leads the Britons with 47 goals, was shutout in the Britons' 10-8 loss to Adrian in the regular season contest.
