Nelson, Weaver Gain MIAA Titles

Thursday Results

HOLLAND, Mich. – Kristin Nelson and Amanda Weaver clinched their place on the all-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's track & field team by winning individual titles on the first day of the league championship meet.

Nelson and Weaver combined to produce 20 of Albion's 21 ½ points on the first day of the meet. Albion sits in fifth place in the team standings.

Nelson successfully defended her league championship in the long jump, sailing 17' 10 ¾". She will have a busy day Friday as she will try to add titles in the triple jump and 100-meter hurdles. Nelson qualified fourth in the hurdles when she reached the finish line in 15.81 seconds in the Thursday preliminary.

Weaver easily won her first league title with a run of 38:09.78 in the 10,000 meters. She reached the finish line eight seconds ahead of the second-place runner. Weaver will also go for more league titles Friday as she is scheduled to run in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 5,000 meters.

Rachel Derocher produced a point toward Albion's team score when she finished eighth in the 10,000 meters and the Britons picked up a ½ point when Victoria Sochor tied for eighth in the pole vault.

In preliminary heats Thursday, Ashley Miracle qualified second in the 800 meters with a run of 2:20.34, and Lizzie Tuma qualified eighth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:10.93).
