La CROSSE, Wis. – Kristin Nelson achieved a school record in the 100-meter hurdles and a personal record in the high jump on the first day of the heptathlon competition in the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championship.
A senior from Iron Mountain, Nelson racked up 2,637 points to hold 20th place out of 22 competitors. Her score is a 66 point improvement on the first day score from the Gregory Invitational when she qualified for the NCAA Championship.
She started the day by placing 12th in the hurdles, reaching the finish line in 15.14 seconds. Nelson was one of five athletes to clear the high jump bar at 1.51 meters, the equivalent of 4' 11 ½".
Nelson threw the shot put 27' 7 ½" and raced to 14th place in the 200 meters with a time of 26.49 seconds.
Friday events in the heptathlon include the long jump, javelin throw, and 800-meter run.
