La CROSSE, Wis. - Kristin Nelson came through at the right time Friday to finish her collegiate career as a honorable mention All-American. The Albion College senior from Iron Mountain finished 12th in the heptathlon competition in the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championship. She moved up eight places after sitting 20th after four events on Thursday.
Nelson flirted with disaster in the long jump after fouling on her first two attempts. She managed to tie for ninth in the field of 22 athletes with a leap of 17' 2" on her third and final attempt.
"Her third jump was really good for taking off a foot behind the board," Albion Coach Lance Coleman said. "She put the long jump behind her and had her second-best efforts of her career in the javelin and 800. It was a really good performance for Kristin, who was competing in the heptathlon for the third time in her career."
Nelson then threw the javelin 102' 3" and turned in the third-fastest time in the 800 meters (2:24.99) to finish the two-day competition with 4,516 points.
