Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Albion College women's soccer coach Eric Scott hopes his team's 3-2 victory over Calvin College Wednesday becomes a defining moment in the Britons push to qualify for the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament for the first time since 2010.
Paige Capel and Carly Veenstra scored as Calvin held a 2-0 lead late in the first half.
Molly Hancock finished a breakaway opportunity in the 43rd minute for her fifth goal of the season, but the Britons still trailed 2-1 at halftime after being outshot 9-3 over the first 45 minutes.
"We had a discussion at halftime calling this one of those moments in the season that exposes your character for what it is," Scott said. "We showed tremendous resolve coming back."
Jenna Urso scored the equalizer in the 54th minute, and her corner kick reached Domenique Sarnecky in the 64th minute. It was Sarnecky's eighth goal and fourth game-winner of the season. Urso has produced 10 goals and 3 assists in her first season at the collegiate level.
Calvin was credited with 12 shots in the second half, but Scott maintained he was pleased with the defensive effort. First-year goalkeeper Maggie Troost finished with eight saves.
"Our back line did a great job responding to a less than average first half," Scott said. "Domenique Sarnecky and Mikaela Ray were awesome all day."
The victory pushes Albion to 10-5-2 overall and 6-5-2 in contests against MIAA rivals. It is Albion's first 10-win season since 2007.
"Ten wins is nice, but we can't settle," Scott said.
Albion currently holds a two-point lead over Adrian College in the race for fourth place in the MIAA. The Britons are home Saturday for a date with a Saint Mary's College squad they defeated in overtime during the first round of league play.
