Box Score DEFIANCE, Ohio – Emily DeWaters and Erin Nelson provided the scoring in Albion's 10-3 run over the final five minutes of the first half and the Britons never looked back in posting a 65-53 victory over Defiance College in non-league women's basketball action inside the Karl H. Weaner Center.
The Britons are 2-0 for the first time since the 2008-2009 campaign. Albion went on to record 15 victories in that season.
Albion called timeout after falling behind 10-2 a little more than two minutes into the game.
Catie Neary and Mikaela Bromley scored four points each as Albion ripped off an 8-2 run to take its first lead, 23-22, with nine minutes left in the first half.
Nelson and DeWaters scored on consecutive possessions as Albion built a 33-30 lead with 3 ½ minutes left in the first half. The Britons extended the margin to 39-30 as Nelson and DeWaters hit shots from the field and DeWaters tacked on two free throws.
"Emily was shooting with confidence," Albion Head Coach Doreen Carden said. "We were able to settle in once we got some turnovers and easy baskets."
Defiance got as close as three points in the second half. Bromley and Oreyana Curry made baskets in the paint, DeWaters made the second of a two-shot free throw opportunity, and Nelson scored in the paint as Albion built the margin to 51-41 with less than 14 minutes to play.
"The nice thing this year is we are getting contributions from everybody," Carden said.
DeWaters produced 13 points off the bench, making 4-of-7 shots from the field. Olivia Savage led the starters with 11 points and four assists and Nelson collected her first double-double at the collegiate level with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
"Erin is going to be special for us," Carden said. "She's a great athlete who can rebound and score."
Next up for Albion is a trip to northeast Ohio for the Victory Promotions Tip-Off Classic. The Britons meet tournament host Hiram College at 8 p.m. Friday.
