Box Score HOLLAND, Mich. – Albion College's best women's soccer campaign since 2007 came to an end with a 2-1 loss to Hope College in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament semifinal match.
Albion completed the season at 11-6-4, its highest win total since the '07 squad went 14-3-2.
"We've put whatever happened before I got here behind us," Albion second-year coach Eric Scott said. "We can move forward and start building."
Albion scored on its only shot on goal. Caroline Eagan sent a corner kick to the box in the 12th minute. There were a bunch of players in the box and Domenique Sarnecky got to the ball for her ninth goal of the season.
Possession opportunities were few and far between for Albion from that point on.
"We just couldn't connect enough passes off turnovers to get us to their end," Scott said. "This was a good learning experience for the 19 underclassmen we have on the roster. We'll take this experience. The whole off-season now is getting back to this tournament."
Hope pressed for the equalizer, and Albion initially escaped some dangerous situations as Erin Jipping and Kristin Hazlett sent shots wide. Allie Wittenbach scored on her second goal on goal, placing a shot from 18 yards out into the bottom corner of the goal with 13 minutes left in the first half.'
The score remained level until there were 14 minutes left in regulation. Maria DeShaw stuck a free kick from five yards outside the top of the box just inside the left post for the game-winner.
Albion goalkeeper Maggie Troost stopped 10 of the 12 shots she faced.
