Box Score ALBION, Mich. – Albion College Women's Soccer Coach Eric Scott has emphasized the importance of winning races and battles for the ball. The Britons may not have won those races and battles early, but they won enough to pull out a 2-1 overtime victory over Trine University.
The victory pulled Albion, 3-3-1 against its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rivals, into a tie with Kalamazoo College for third place in the standings. The Britons, however, have played one more contest than Kalamazoo College and Calvin College. Albion has a bye Sept. 30 and it returns to action when it completes the first round of league play next Saturday at Olivet College.
"It's a good result anytime you get a win at home," Scott said. "There is a lot of parity in the league.
"I don't have an answer to why we got off to a slow start, but I credit our players for finding the game," Scott added.
Jenna Urso scored both goals for Albion, including her first game-winner at the collegiate level in the 92nd minute. A Trine defender missed an opportunity to clear the ball in overtime and Urso tucked a shot into the bottom left corner of the goal.
"Jenna is capable of those little moments that can change the game," Scott said.
Urso was one of Scott's three stars of the match along with forward Domenique Sarnecky and midfielder Mikaela Ray. Ray consistently won the ball and Sarnecky nearly won the contest with her individual effort that produced a shot in the 91st minute.
Briton goalkeeper Maggie Troost collected four saves, but she was impressive in controlling the box.
"Maggie has done a good job of staying high when we have possession," Scott said. "She takes care of early penetration against the defense."
