Box Score ALBION, Mich. – With the midfielders controlling 70 percent of the possession, it seemed like it would only be a matter of time until Albion College would score against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Saint Mary's College.
After the Britons missed several glorious scoring chances, however, one had to wonder if the forwards would get too anxious.
Albion finally broke through, as sophomore Jenna Urso pounced on a rebound with 18 minutes left and she assisted on a goal by junior Domenique Sarnecky nearly five minutes later as it defended its home field with a 2-0 victory.
"I was pleased with the effort, but we have to do a better job of finishing scoring chances early on so we don't put stress on ourselves," Albion Coach Eric Scott said. "They were dangerous on the counter."
Albion was buzzing for a goal early as Sarnecky got her head on a Caroline Eagan corner kick 2 ½ minutes into the contest. Urso had three shots stopped by Saint Mary's goalkeeper Rachel McCarthy in the first 12 minutes and Eagan clanked an attempt off the post.
The momentum of the match shifted to Saint Mary's in the middle portion of the first half. Maggie McLaughlin and Jenn Jarmy took shots a minute apart and Kathryn Lueking tested Albion goalkeeper Maggie Troost by placing a shot on goal.
Albion controlled play in the second half, holding a 13-2 advantage in shots.
Troost finished with three saves in picking up her fifth shutout of the season.
Albion, 7-5 overall and 5-4 against MIAA rivals, celebrates Senior Day at 2:30 p.m. Saturday with a home match against Alma College.
