HOLLAND, Mich. – Derek Bosko and Sebastian Tostado each won Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association individual event titles Thursday night and they narrowly missed adding a gold medal in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Bosko, a sophomore from Holland, won the 50-yard freestyle in his hometown. He completed the final in 20.97 seconds to beat Kalamazoo's Dylan Shearer (21.26) and Calvin's Eli Holstege (21.20) to the wall.
Tostado and Parker Belmore achieved NCAA Division III Championship 'B' cut times and produced 37 points toward Albion's team score with a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard individual medley. Tostado led the entire race and finished in 1:52.98, while Belmore touched the wall in 1:53.50. David Alday also reached the championship race, finishing seventh in 1:56.18.
Bosko set a blistering time of 20.29 on the final leg of the freestyle relay, but he ran out of room to catch Kalamazoo. The Hornets completed the race in 1:23.41, two-tenths of a second ahead of the Britons. Belmore and David Alday saw the first and third legs, respectively.
Bosko and Tostado also helped Albion score a school record in the final event of the night, the 400-yard medley relay. Joined by Lucas Harder and Belmore, the Britons finished third in 3:27.97.
Albion also had a number of swimmers score in the 500-yard freestyle. Blake Blair finished seventh (4:48.03), Andrew Mattson was 12th (4:56.32), Sean Pearce was 14th (4:58.31) and Kyle Harvey was 15th (4:59.36).
Jacob Maurer scored a seventh-place finish in 1-meter diving, achieving a score of 379.05.
Albion sits third in the team standings after the first full day of competition. Calvin leads the field with 302 points, followed by Kalamazoo (251), the Britons (212) and Hope (191).
The Friday schedule includes the 200 medley relay, 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, and 3-meter diving.
